Local Shopping: Kennington
Kennington developed in Roman times because of it's
proximity to the only part of the Thames that could be crossed at
the time. The Roman Road Stane Street ran from the bridge to Chichester
- Kennington Park Road lies on it's route. Another Roman road branched
off opposite Kennington Road and went off towards Brixton.
Shopping in Kennington suffers from being too close to the Elephant and Castle shopping centre - and that situation's not likely to change, as the Elephant is to get a multi-million pound facelift. But Kennington still provides people with some unusual places to spend their money.
Soma books, in Kennington Lane, for instance, has been importing books from India, Africa, the Caribbean, and the USA, for the last thirty years. It also stocks Indian crafts. The Danielle Arnaud Gallery of Contemporary Art also has an international emphasis, showing the work of young artists from around the world. A wide range of media is displayed, including videos, photographs, sound, installations, paintings, drawings and sculpture. The gallery was only opened a few years ago, but already has an international reputation. Another nearby gallery offering work for sale is the 1885 Gallery at the Camera Club in Bowden Street. The Gallery exhibits a wide range of work, by both members and non-members of the club, with work by a different photographer every month.
