Streatham
STOP PRESS! Streatham High Street in London came top in the survey's Streets of Shame. It was described as "a scene of urban decay with a few superficial pots with Palm trees in them," according to The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment. September 2002
Streatham began existence as a small hamlet on rolling fields just outside London, hard to believe looking at the high street before me - swallowed as it is by buildings and general urban sprawl. But even within inner city grime, there are some signs of originality sparkling away. You just have to look a bit harder, that's all.
Shrubbery Road has lots to offer to more artistic among you, and if you are looking for that certain something as an extra special gift, then along here you may just find what you are searching for. Of course, if you want to pamper yourself (and who doesn't?), then there are a few places along here that sell products to make you feel just right. Mmm.
Streatham Hill has shops that will cater for your home, your pet and your stomach! D.I.Y is well represented and if you fancy pampering your pet or gazing at tropical fish, then this may be the best place for you. Also Streatham Hill train station still has the feel of the grand old days when Streatham was a spa town, loved by the Victorian gentry. Well worth a look.
The pavement of Streatham High Road may look like it spontaneously erupts litter and grows kebab shops from small tiny scraps of fallen doners, but you can find a few bargains. Sports, skates and baseball caps, food, clothes and charity shops - there are over 300 shops along this road, ranging from locally owned shops, to small town household names. This area has suffered with lots of shoppers preferring to go to shopping centers in nearby districts, but business is slowly starting to look up again. Well, makes an improvement on looking down I'd say. |
