Ritzy Cinema

"The Ritzy is my local cinema and, as a citizen of the global village, it provides me simultaneously with the cosmopolitan and the cosy."
Will Self, author

This flagship cinema in the heart of vibrant Brixton is London’s busiest and biggest independent cinema with five screens taking over 370,000 admissions a year. It is also the only cinema in the country with two digital projectors. Screenings of the best of world cinema are backed up by regular Sunday matinees, a choice of two different films for kids on Saturdays monthly Mother and Baby screenings and a host of one-off events.

The original Ritzy was designed as the Electric Pavilion in 1910 by E. C. Homer and Lucas. The client was Israel Davis, one of a noted family of cinema developers who created a large chain in south and west London that included the listed Pavillion, Shepherds Bush. The Electric Pavillion opened on 11 March 1911 and was one of England’s earliest purpose built cinemas seating over 750 seats in the single auditorium.

I've been going here for a long time. The Ritzy, is the beating heart of Brixton, along with the Market, Cold Harbour lane and Cycle shop.

I'm a fan. The prices in the evenings are a little steep but daytime it good value for money. Love the home-made cakes and the cafe is a good place to take your laptop and get some work done. The food is OK, pizzas too greasy but good hot chocolates! mmm. Great selection of films too.

Some very negative stuff here about the Ritzy, I'd disagree with most of it. The sound and picture quality are not West End, but they're ok and the prices are lower. The range of films on offer are way way better than the majors deign to offer us, the bar and cafe upstairs are friendly and relaxed - if you're local it's a total god-send. If you like paying a fortune for the fully corporatized Hollywood McExperience in Leicester Square then go there and don't bitch off a good local cinema.
